Radio Direction Finding (RDF) is a powerful complement to visual sensors, giving both handheld and drone operators a reliable indication of where a missing person may be — and helping to pinpoint their exact location.
Especially as in today’s world, everyone carries at least one device that continuously transmits signals, whether via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, radio frequencies, or cellular networks (2G, 4G, 5G).
The X•SAR technology features a user-friendly tablet dashboard that enables operators to visually identify the direction of the strongest signals.
It can scan for Wi-Fi devices, push-to-talk radios, radio beacons, 2G phones, 4G smartphones, and 5G smart devices. Each frequency type can be scanned separately, with all results displayed clearly on a single page.
This allows operators to quickly and accurately determine the direction of missing persons, making search and rescue operations more efficient.
Operators can easily select preferred frequency types within the tablet-friendly dashboard, enabling rescuers to use radio direction finding (RDF) to more precisely locate missing persons.
Operators can easily select the desired frequency type to scan in 45-degree increments. Based on visual and digital reporting, signal strength is clearly displayed — helping the operator determine the direction in which to continue the search.
X•SAR systems also feature advanced capabilities for locating and identifying devices by their MAC address — and, in some cases, even by their device name.
The X•SAR Systems can detect Wi-Fi devices at long range and Bluetooth devices at short range by combining signal strength with the devices’ MAC addresses. With a single tap on the results page, operators can instantly reveal the detected Wi-Fi and BLE MAC addresses, enhancing accuracy in search and rescue missions.

For improved localization and close-proximity results — whether using Drone or Handheld X•SAR systems — the platform not only detects signal strength but can also provide MAC addresses along with additional identifiable attributes of nearby mobile devices.
This enables operators to better determine whether a detected device truly belongs to the missing person.

Please note: This feature is only functional when the missing person’s mobile device has Wi-Fi or Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) enabled, and when the device hardware supports either or both technologies. In the case of older 2G cell phones, Push-to-Talk radios, or emergency beacons, this capability may not be available.
That’s why X•SAR supports a large Radio Frequency (RF) spectrum — from 100 MHz to 6,000 MHz (6 GHz) — ensuring coverage across a wide range of signal types, including cell phones, Push-to-Talk and Emergency Beacons.
